Here is the latest Pac-12 Conference sports news from The Associated Press – WDRB

UNDATED (AP) — Twenty-five years since Hal Mumme unleashed the groundbreaking Air Raid offense on the Southeastern Conference it has become pervasive throughout football. But outside of Mike Leach, Mumme’s protege and Air Raid Godfather, most coaches are running an evolved form of the offense, with more running plays, more varied formations and an assortment of motions and misdirection. Air Raid principles and concepts can be found in just about every modern passing game from NFL to high school. But at the highest levels of the sport, it’s hard to find anyone actually running the Air Raid.

UNDATED (AP) — Who will take home college football’s biggest individual awards in 2022, from the Heisman to the Outland trophies? AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo surveys the favorites, contenders and possible breakout stars who will make a run at some hardware. Will Bryce Young repeat as Heisman winner or can another Lincoln Riley-coached quarterback win the most prestigious award in college football?

UNDATED (AP) — The last major change in the Pac-12 came with the addition of Colorado and Utah in 2011, an expansion met with excitement. The latest bit of realignment feels a lot different. UCLA and Southern California aren’t leaving for the Big Ten until 2024, but there’s already an uncomfortable air out West. But while the Pac-12′s future is still up in the air, the main goal remains getting through to the College Football Playoff.

UNDATED (AP) — Nepotism is considered one of the most significant factors that has led to Black coaches being under-represented in major college football. The Associated Press examined rosters of the 65 Power Five conference schools and found 25 instances of family members on the same coaching staff. Of those, 22 involved white coaches. The executive director of the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches says the issue cannot be ignored.

SEATTLE (AP) — Washington has named Michael Penix Jr. as its starting quarterback for the season opener against Kent State. The transfer from Indiana had been considered the leader for most of the offseason in the competition with Dylan Morris and Sam Huard. New Washington coach Kalen DeBoer says he met with all three quarterbacks to inform them of the decision. Penix had an injury-filled career at Indiana before deciding to transfer after last season. Penix knows DeBoer’s system the best since he played for him in 2019 with the Hoosiers.

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA women’s basketball title game will be broadcast on ABC this season for the first time. The championship game usually airs in prime time but will be played at 3 p.m. Eastern on April 2. ESPN said it would look at moving the game back to prime time in the future but currently has commitments to entertainment shows that night. Last season’s championship game, in which South Carolina beat UConn, was the most viewed women’s title game in nearly two decades, drawing 4.85 million viewers. The national semifinals averaged 2.7 million viewers, up 21% year over year, and was the most viewed semifinals in a decade. The full tournament averaged 634,000 viewers, up 16% from the previous year’s coverage.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA’s Zach Charbonnet quietly emerged as one of the top running backs in the Pac-12 after transferring from Michigan. Now the junior is looking to establish himself as one of the team leaders with the Bruins expected to possibly contend in the conference this year. Charbonnet led the Pac-12 last season with seven 100-yard rushing games and was second in average rushing yards per game. UCLA opens its season Sept. 3 against Bowling Green.

UNDATED (AP) — Mississippi, Southern California, LSU and Nebraska were among the most active teams recruiting players from the transfer portal ahead of the college football season. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin sought experienced players who could fill immediate needs. USC’s Lincoln Riley and LSU’s Brian Kelly went in looking for star power as they attempt quick rebuilds. Nebraska’s Scott Frost is simply trying to save his job. The top-ranked portal class belongs to Riley at USC  but Kiffin is right behind at No. 2.
