UNDATED (AP) — Twenty-five years since Hal Mumme unleashed the groundbreaking Air Raid offense on the Southeastern Conference it has become pervasive throughout football. But outside of Mike Leach, Mumme’s protege and Air Raid Godfather, most coaches are running an evolved form of the offense, with more running plays, more varied formations and an assortment of motions and misdirection. Air Raid principles and concepts can be found in just about every modern passing game from NFL to high school. But at the highest levels of the sport, it’s hard to find anyone actually running the Air Raid.

UNDATED (AP) — Who will take home college football’s biggest individual awards in 2022, from the Heisman to the Outland trophies? AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo surveys the favorites, contenders and possible breakout stars who will make a run at some hardware. Will Bryce Young repeat as Heisman winner or can another Lincoln Riley-coached quarterback win the most prestigious award in college football?

UNDATED (AP) — Nepotism is considered one of the most significant factors that has led to Black coaches being under-represented in major college football. The Associated Press examined rosters of the 65 Power Five conference schools and found 25 instances of family members on the same coaching staff. Of those, 22 involved white coaches. The executive director of the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches says the issue cannot be ignored.

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA women’s basketball title game will be broadcast on ABC this season for the first time. The championship game usually airs in prime time but will be played at 3 p.m. Eastern on April 2. ESPN said it would look at moving the game back to prime time in the future but currently has commitments to entertainment shows that night. Last season’s championship game, in which South Carolina beat UConn, was the most viewed women’s title game in nearly two decades, drawing 4.85 million viewers. The national semifinals averaged 2.7 million viewers, up 21% year over year, and was the most viewed semifinals in a decade. The full tournament averaged 634,000 viewers, up 16% from the previous year’s coverage.

UNDATED (AP) — Preseason picks offer evidence of how difficult it is to separate the top teams in women’s volleyball. Nebraska is the No. 1 team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. No. 3 Wisconsin is the Big Ten coaches’ pick to win a fourth straight conference championship. Wisconsin beat Nebraska in a five-set thriller for the 2021 NCAA championship. No one would be surprised to see a rematch when the national semifinals and final are held in Omaha, Nebraska, in December. The regular season opens this weekend. Texas is ranked No. 2 in between the two Big Tean powers.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Mack Brown says Drake Maye will start at quarterback when the Tar Heels open the season Saturday against Florida A&M. Maye is a redshirt freshman who had been competing with third-year sophomore Jacolby Criswell to get the first shot at replacing quarterback Sam Howell. Howell was the Tar Heels’ starter the past three seasons but is now in the NFL. Brown said there wasn’t much separation between Maye and Criswell. He added that Criswell will get opportunities if the offense is not moving the ball. This will be the Tar Heels’ earliest start to the season since facing Oklahoma on Aug. 25, 2001.

UNDATED (AP) — Alabama stars Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. are among four players from the top-ranked Crimson Tide selected to The Associated Press preseason All-America team. Alabama defensive backs Jordan Battle and Eli Ricks also made the first team. No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia each had three players chosen to the first team. Ricks was one of seven players who have transferred during their careers to make either the first or second teams. That includes USC receiver Jordan Addison, who won the Biletnikoff Award last season at Pittsburgh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Kedon Slovis is the new starting quarterback at Pitt. Head coach Pat Narduzzi says Slovis has won the starting job following a lengthy competition with Nick Patti. Slovis transferred to Pitt over the winter after three seasons at USC. Slovis threw 58 touchdowns against 24 interceptions with the Trojans. He now gets a shot at taking over for Kenny Pickett, who led the Panthers to an ACC title last fall before heading to the NFL. Slovis will make his debut on Sept. 1 when the 17th-ranked Panthers face rival West Virginia in the renewal of the “Backyard Brawl.”
